Step 1: Start With the Barrel

The heart of any precision rifle is its barrel. I source match-grade barrels—think Bartlein or Krieger—because factory tubes often can’t cut it. These are hand-lapped, cut-rifled, and built for consistency, not cost. I pick the twist rate based on what you’re shooting—1:8 for heavy .308 rounds, 1:10 for lighter loads. No guesswork, just groups that shrink. A good barrel isn’t cheap, but it’s the foundation of every custom rifle I build.

Step 2: Blueprint the Action

Next, I true the action. Factory receivers are rarely square—bolt lugs might not seat evenly, throwing off alignment. I lap the lugs, square the face, and thread the barrel to mate perfectly. This isn’t flashy; it’s
physics. A trued action means every shot starts from the same place. For a precision rifle, that’s non-negotiable.

Step 3: Bed the Build

A rifle’s only as good as its stability. I bed the action into the stock—usually a carbon fiber or fiberglass chassis for weight and rigidity. This locks everything tight, cutting vibration and flex. Factory rifles skip this or half-ass it with plastic pillars. My custom rifles get full Devcon or epoxy bedding—because 500-yard shots don’t forgive slop.

Step 4: Tune the Trigger

Triggers make or break a shot. I ditch factory junk for aftermarket gems—Timney, TriggerTech, Jewel—set to your spec, usually 1.5-2.5 pounds with zero creep. I test every pull for that glass-rod break. A precision rifle’s trigger should feel like an extension of your intent, not a tug-of-war. That’s how I roll at Reign Firearms.

Step 5: Fit the Shooter

Ergonomics seal the deal. I fit the stock—adjustable cheek risers, length of pull, recoil pads—to your frame. Whether you’re prone on a ridge or standing at the range, it’s got to shoulder naturally.
